Well, Race Report fans, it’s that Red Letter Day – London Marathon Day. And, as ever, Chiltern Harriers did not disappoint.
It’s hard to know where to start, but special shout-outs must be due to David Walker and Barbara Ralph. David is one of that very rare breed: an ever-present, meaning he has completed every single London Marathon. Barbara – if memory serves – is the woman who has completed the most London Marathons. David opted for the virtual MyWay event, as he has for the last few years. He has finished, but his time is currently unavailable on the site. Barbara pounded round the 26.2 miles of London tarmac in a time of 5.49.28. There was a small Chiltern contingent contributing to the Wycombe and Chiltern composite team in the first YDL Upper Age Group match of the season at Perivale on Sunday. Although only 27-strong the composite finished a comfortable second place in the five-team division.
U20 Jack Turner collected two more PBs to log 4.37.12 to win B string 1500m and 62.24 in B string 400m. Callum Powell took the U20 A string 1500m win in 4.18.48. James Henderson won U18 B string 1500m in 4.44.25. In the U18 800m Charlie De Sousa ran a PB of 2.23.51 to be third. In U20 800m James Henderson was second in 2.19.44. In U18 2000m steeplechase A string Edward Johnson was second in 6.46.02 and James Malin made a good debut to win B string in 6.54.19. Abi Masters was the sole Chiltern sprinter involved running 14.14 and 29.61 in her 100m and 200m. Evelyn Wildman continued her great start to the season with a win in 1500m steeplechase, recording a PB of 4.53.43. Issy Robinson won B string in 5.45.02. Abi was part of the U18 4 x 100m team that came second, and Evelyn, Issy and James were in the mixed 4 x 400m relay team that were also second. In the U18 men’s 4 x 400m James Malin, Charlie De Sousa, and Edward Johnson joined Wycombe’s Adam Heywood to be second. The second match is at Jarman Park on May 24th. There was another batch of great Chiltern performances at the Watford Open on April 15th. A mild evening began blustery but became calmer as it wore on.

The Spring Marathon season is truly and properly upon us, as is the sunny Spring weather.
But for those for whom a marathon is just not enough, we’ll kick things off with a report from yesterday’s Chiltern Ridge Classic 50k. A point-to-point race from Berkhamsted to Wendover, it takes in the local beaty spots (aka hills) of Ivinghoe Beacon, Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf. On a day where the weather matched the stunning scenery, James Hudson was home first in 4.19.22. He was joined swiftly by: Russell VandenBrekel in 4.48.26 (course PB); Mark Nicholas in 5.02.02; and honorary Harrier Richard Quantrill in 5.02.27. For a course that tough, those are truly awesome times! This Reporter is very envious, and tired just thinking about it…. Good Evening, Race Report fans. And the Spring Marathon season is officially upon us! But before we get into that, and with apologies, a much belated result from 29 March. Two happy Harriers were in action in the British Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships. For the uninitiated, a reminder that duathlon is run-bike-run. The Oulton Park circuit was a 4.3k run route, and 21k of cycling. Hannah Wardley completed the test in 1.11.26, coming home as 3rd female and 1st in her age category, while Neil Turner was 2nd in his age category in a time of 1.05.49. Well done, both!
Hoppy Easter, Race Report fans! I hope you’ve had a fabulous long weekend. We have here in Race Report HQ: Nathan’s Farm (highly recommend), soft play and an unexpected rendezvous with various CHAC coaches in Hervine’s Park (for the purposes of admiring the bluebells, not a training session).
And with that, back to the serious business of Race Reporting and here is a smorgasbord of the last few weeks. James Malin, Harrison Lawrence, and James Henderson There were some good performances and several personal bests at the first Watford Open of the season at Woodside Stadium last Wednesday.
