Good Evening, Race Report fans! We’ll have to kick things off with the World 24-hour Championships in Albi, France on 18 October. Our own Ali Young was there, once again, representing GB and running round and round and round a track (of all the mad things to do!) This time, I think it’s fair to say, it was all about the team. And what a team they were! It was Gold for Team GB in the women’s competition, including first race and an overall world record for Sarah Webster (278.62 km). Ali clocked a sickening 213.36 km, pacing the team’s third runner home. Not only was it team gold, but a world record distance was achieved by the top three scorers and five GB female athletes went further than 213km - a first for a championship. All that said, all we know is we are well proud of our girl. Well done, Ali! You deserved that bottle of fizz on the flight home xx Wormwood Scrubs again proved a successful stamping ground for Chiltern Harriers yesterday with two teams winning medals at the SEAA Cross Country Relay Championships. This meeting has seen several Chiltern medals in previous years and yesterday saw the meeting bookended by bronze medals for the U17 Women at the start, and Senior Men at the end. A mild, grey day provided good conditions for running, but the course was very firm in places with some athletes opting to run in road shoes. The first race was the U17/U20 Women’s race where two races are combined and results separated at the end. The U17 Women featured two Chiltern teams and there was a solo run from Roxie Jones as an U20 in the same race. Issy Robinson led off for the U17 A team and had a good run of 10.36 over the 2.9k route to bring the team home in 10th overall but sixth in the U17 race. Evelyn Wildman made up several places with a leg of 9.56 to finish in fourth overall and fourth U17 team. Alex Whitfield ran a mature run of 10.47 to overtake the U17 team ahead but lose a place to an U20 team. So bronze medals won. There were also good runs from the U17 B team – Megan Lockwood (11.27), Marlie Nkoane (12.30) and Lydia Cross (11.52). Roxie Jones ran 11.02 on the first leg of the U20s.
Next up were the U17 and U20 Men who also shared the same race. The U17 A team ran well for 11th place – Edward Johnson finishing second on leg 1 in 8.36 and James Henderson (9.29) and Eddie O’Brien (9.33) completing the team. There were good runs from the incomplete B team – Zach Cleary (9.27) and Henry Keen (10.00). The U20 trio of Callum Powell (9.11), Jack Turner (9.53) and Rory Hilton (10.07) were sixth. The U13 Girls had an incomplete team but Chloe Willson (7.30) and Lottie Monnington (8.07) both ran well on the shorter 2K circuit. The U13 Boys were 19th courtesy of Barnaby Williams (7.37), Jack Dalton (7.44) and Thomas Cooper (7.53). The U15 Girls were also incomplete but Maya Davis (7.25) and Juliette MacDougall (7.21) both ran strongly and finished leg 2 in fifth. The U15 Boys had two teams out. The A team came 22nd thanks to John Rooney (7.05), Josh Woodward (7.46) and Isaac Taylor (7.00). The B team were not far behind in 26th – Hector Gamblen (7.29), Isaac Brown (7.27) and Kit Dixon (7.33). There had been medals for the Chiltern Senior Men in several of the last few championships and a good Green Arrows quartet kept the tradition going on a two lap 4.2k route. Simon Bossi finished third on leg 1 in an impressive 12.44. Harry Cox kept that position with 13.08 and Aran Davidson (13.38) lost a place. In-form Alex Aldred ran a strong second lap to bring the team home for bronze with 13.12. The B team of Daire Stack (13.28), Tom Dixon (14.50), Cameron Reid (13.48) and Jonny Slade (14.51) ran very well to finish 11th and third B team from thirty complete teams. There will be Chiltern Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s teams at the National Cross Country Relay Championships at Mansfield on November 1st. Several young Chiltern Harriers ran in the Bucks County round of the English Schools Cross Country Cup on Tuesday.
There were some excellent runs across the age groups and several local schools have progressed to the Regional Final at Cokethorpe School in Oxfordshire on November 4th. The courses were fairly flat round playing fields and tended to be on the short side, especially the junior races. Junior Girls Lottie Monnington (DCHS) ran very well for second place with Aura Lue Fong (Wycombe Abbey) fifth. Amelia Hanstein (Chesham) was 18th. Junior Boys There was some good packing from the DCGS runners in this one – Barnaby Williams seventh, Jack Dixon eighth, and Thomas Cooper tenth. Inter Girls It was close at the front of the Inter Girls race with Nell Frost (Wycombe Abbey) third, Juliette MacDougall (Wycombe High) fourth, Maya Davis (DCHS) fifth, and Nia Clarke (Chesham) eighth. Aiyla Haigh was 15th and Amelia Qasam 29th for DCHS. Inter Boys Logan Gaskell (Thorpe House) was second, Harrison Lawrence (DCGS) fourth, Isaac McCall (DCGA) eighth, Isaac Taylor (DCGS) ninth, and Colin Miles (Borlase) tenth. Toby Reynolds (Thorpe House) was 16th. Senior Girls Evelyn Wildman ran well to win the Senior Girls race, with Issy Robinson (Chesham) sixth. Alice Peckham (Chesham) was ninth, Megan Lockwood (Chesham) 12th, Lara Milburn (Borlase) 16th, Ffion Harman (Wycombe High) 17th, Lydia Cross (DCHS) 18th, Abi Masters (Wycombe High) 24th and Rebecca Lawson (DCHS) 25th. Senior Boys There was a good Chiltern presence at the front of this race with Edward Johnson (Aylesbury) taking the win. Aidan Suleyman (DCGS) was second, Thomas Reynolds (DCGS) sixth, Daniel Munn (DCGS) eighth, Charlie Quantrill (DCGS) ninth, Eddie O’Brien (DCGS) tenth, and Zach Cleary (Aylesbury) 11th. Felix Danielli (DCGS) was 18th. The Regional Round on November 4th sees most of those athletes compete again for their schools against stiffer competition from Bedfordshire, Northants, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. It was a great start to the Chiltern League season on Saturday as the club took a narrow win at Verulamium Park, St Albans. It was the first visit to this park from the league for 14 years and the host club put on a good match on challenging hilly courses. The weather was still and increasingly warm as the afternoon wore on. It was the best attended league match for some time with over 1200 runners taking part overall, ninety-three of whom were Chiltern Harriers. There were individual wins from U13 Chloe Willson, U17 Tom Ford, and V50 Nick Hughes, and team victories for U17 Men and Veteran Men. The U11s had their best turnout for several years and the girls kicked things off with the Chiltern team a promising third. Ezrayah Latham made a great debut to be sixth and was joined in the scorers by Martha Stanley (14th) and Marni Ison-Stierer (23rd). Also contributing was Jemima Barnes in 24th. On the boys side the Chiltern team were fourth with Freddy Higgins (11th), Kit Reynolds (12th) and Ollie Dixon (22nd) scoring. A good-sized team was competed by Evan Atkinson (34th), Ethan Brown (43rd), Oliver Ingham (47th) and Joseph Holdsworth (56th). It was encouraging to see increased overall race numbers in both of the U11s races. In the U13 Girls race Chloe Willson made an impressive debut, second overall and first in Division 1. The Chiltern foursome was completed by Lottie Monnington (13th), Amelia Hanstein (33rd) and Emilia Ingham (40th). The team was fifth. The boys were sixth, newcomer William Clasby leading the team home in ninth. Also scoring were Barnaby Williams (19th), Jack Dalton (22nd) and Thomas Cooper (26th), and completing the team were Jack Dixon (31st), Jonathan Kalibbala (41st), and Charlie Yeoh (69th). The small U15 girls team that came fourth was led in by Maya Davis in sixth. Nia Clarke had a great run to be 11th and Mala Bahia (33rd) and Aiyla Haigh (37th) completed the scoring. The U15 Boys had a much bigger turnout and were also fourth. The scoring quartet were Harrison Lawrence (13th), John Rooney (25th), Isaac McCall (26th) and Colin Miles (28th). Also running well were Jack Rogers (30th), Isaac Taylor (31st), Jacob McCall (35th), Josh Woodward (41st), Hector Gamblen (43rd), Toby Reynolds (44th), Oliver Atkinson (46th), and Kit Dixon (61st). A very good U17/U20 women’s team tackled a tough course featuring two hilly loops. Evelyn Wildman was fourth, Issy Robinson 11th and Alex Whitfield 14th to score in the team that was narrowly third. Also contributing were Roxie Jones (21st), Megan Lockwood (26th), Lara Milburn (43rd), Lydia Cross (45th) and Izzy McFetrich (52nd). Roxie was fourth U20. The most successful team of the day were the U17 Men. In a big race of 70, Tom Ford and Edward Johnson made it a Chiltern 1-2 at the head of the field and the team took a good win. Aidan Suleyman (9th) and James Holdsworth (12th) completed the scoring. Good efforts also came from Thomas Reynolds (17th), James Henderson (22nd), Eddie O’Brien (23rd), Zach Cleary (25th), Felix Danielli (47th) and Charlie De Sousa (51st). Chiltern had a strong Senior Women’s team out who ran well for third. The scoring six were Bev Whitfield (9th), Maddie Hughes (12th), Katie Royals (22nd), Ellie Bates (30th), Camilla East (41st), and Jenny Bizley (44th). Cathy Holloway was 58th, Lindsey Turner 76th, Sue Slade 100th, Heidi Folkard 111th, Miriam Kempson 120th, Caroline Stephens 128th, Helen Hinde 129th, Tamsin Finch 140th, Tyra Bishop 155th, and Fiona Calder 168th. Bev was second Vet 45, and the Veteran’s foursome that was third were Bev, Ellie, Jenny, and Cathy. The Senior Men’s team was the strongest for a while and all ten scorers were in the top sixty. The Green Arrows were second and were led home by Alex Aldred in tenth, who was backed up by Aran Davidson (15th), Nick Hughes (19th), Tim Lawrence (25th), Daire Stack (29th), James Turner (33rd), Daniel Munn (49th), Jack Turner (53rd), Tom Dixon (57th) and Jonny Slade (60th). Completing a big team were Thomas Flechon (78th), Alan Crozier (130th), Ben Hannen (145th), Tom Pinkham (146th), Tom Robinson (155th), Jon Taylor (184th), Glen Martin (206th), David De Sousa (208th), Mark Johnson (225th), Stuart Henderson (227th), and Dominic Shulte (229th). Nick, Tim, James and Tom Dixon were winners of the vets competition, and the U20 duo, Daniel and Jack, scored enough points to be third U20 team. Nick was first Vet 50, Tim was fourth Vet 40, James seventh Vet 40. Chiltern scored 4188 points to St Albans 4161 and there are only 100 points between the top four clubs. So all to play for at the next match at Oxford Horspath on Saturday November 15th. Good Evening, Race Report fans. I hope as the evenings draw in, Race Report will help you to feel snuggly and warm this Sunday evening. It was great to see many of you at the first Chiltern League match of the season yesterday, in sunny St Albans. Keep your eyes peeled on the website for Steve P’s usual report.
First of all, a look back to last weekend. On 5 October our brilliant Mairead O’Rourke was pacing round the streets of the Chester Marathon. Mairead finished a very respectable 4th in her age category in 3.25.52. There were some good runs from Chiltern athletes at the National Road relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday. As with the Southern relays, the U17 Men were the best performing team, coming an excellent sixth.
The event features some of the best endurance talent in the country with teams from all over England taking part. In bright but blustery conditions Chiltern had representation in the U13 Boys, U15 Boys and U17 Mens categories. All young athletes tackle the same 3.9k undulating course. The Chiltern U15 boys team saw good efforts from Harrison Lawrence (13.42), Isaac McCall (14.31) and Jacob McCall (14.30) in the team that came 46th. John Rooney (16.06) and Toby Reynolds (15.09) were in an incomplete B team. In an incomplete U13 Boys team, Barnaby Williams ran 15.53 and Jack Dalton 15.49 to gain good experience. Tom Ford had a great run leading off the U17 men’s A team, coming second in a very quick 11.37. James Holdsworth (12.20) and Edward Johnson (12.12) both ran well to keep the team in the mix, finishing sixth from the 74 complete teams. The B team also did well with Aidan Suleyman (12.26), Charlie Quantrill (13.05) and Thomas Reynolds (13.08) combining to finish 34th. |
