Happy St David’s Day, Race Report Fans! I hope the daffodils have been smiling at you, wherever you are. Let’s kick things off with something a little bit different. Stateside Chisom Nwafor was competing for Kansas State University at the prestigious “Big 12 Indoor” Championship in Lubbock, Texas (27 – 28 February). Her long jump of 6.51m put Chisom at the top the UK Senior Women’s rankings – an absolutely insane achievement. This reporter can only look on in awe and look forward to maybe having the honour of raking the sand for Chisom when she is back home sometime and fancies a dally at the Southern Athletics League… Meanwhile, in today’s Brighton Half Marathon the Club were represented by Daniel Logue and Patrick Barrett. Daniel came home in 1.41.17, and Patrick in 1.56.01. However, much of today’s Harriers action was at the Berko Half and 5-mile Fun Run (I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, 5 miles is not ‘fun’… especially not on those hills!) Organised by the local Rotary Club, albeit with the support of an event management company, race organisers reported that this year’s event will raise £30,000 for local charities. In the Half Marathon I came home in 1.34.25, joined most rapidly by: Ali Young (1.35.23); Mairead O’Rourke (1.35.34); Richard Moss (1.35.49); Jenny Bizley (1.38.25 - huge PB!); Grant Whitaker (1.42.14); Sylvia Moss (1.44.38); Lauren Mayot (1.44.57 - PB!); Allan Cairns (1.46.52); Frank Gaymond (1.46.49); Kevin Franklin (1.51.07); Chris Pitkin (1.55.16); Nick Talbot (2.00.40); and Rik Edwards (2.06.12). Also Trevor Brawn is a ninja and popped up all over the place along the course. (How does he do that?!) In the 5-mile event the Fords kept it in the family. Tom and Emily were first male (and overall) and first female, respectively, in times of 25.48 and 31.18. Joining them from Chiltern Harriers AC were: Jon Taylor (34.22); Carys Evans (36.28); Heidi Folkard (39.43 - a PB - woop woop!); Phoebe Gorman (47.31); Mel Folkard (48.53); and Steve Field (54.49). Finally, a shout-out to our friends from Welcome to Running. They had a great turnout in the 5-mile event: Isabelle Hatfield, Emer O’Kelly, Mike Ward, Judi Saunders, Douglas King, Olivia King, Julia Cannon, Sarah Reddyhoff, Kasia Fejcher-akhtar, Charlotte Craven and Karen Craven. COMING UP LOCALLY: Humanity Direct Amersham Ultra, Inter-Counties Cross Country, Goring 10k, English Schools’ Cross Country, the next Gade Valley Harriers marathon training run (17 and 20 miles), Hardwick X-Stream and the Hillingdon 20. Check out the Club Calendar for details of these events and more. DON’T FORGET the Club’s AGM on 9 March. AND FINALLY: Race Report runs off of your stories. I look up results of events in the Calendar, but everything else comes from you If you have done an event, or know someone else who has, ping me the results and any photos at [email protected] Comments are closed.
