Good Evening, Race Report fans. I am sorry that it feels like a while since you’ve heard from me. There’s been a bit too much life going on. However, the positive upshot of that is that you get an extra chunky report, full of Race Report goodness for this Sunday evening. Hopefully it will help you to counteract some of the sugariness of Eurovision, for those who indulged in that form of entertainment. First of all: it was a brilliant PB for Ed Wright at the Belfast Marathon on 3 May. Ed clocked a time of 3.20.45 – a very fitting reward for the hard work which he has been putting into training. Well done, Ed! Congratulations are then due not only to the finishers, but to the volunteers, sub-committee and Race Director (Paul McCarthy) who made the Pednor 5 such a success on Bank Holiday Monday, 4 May. I won’t go through all of the Harriers results (there were a lot of you), but here are the prizes:
1st man – Peter Huck of Vale of Aylesbury (26.31) 2nd man – Charlie May of Vale of Aylesbury (27.13) 3rd man – Josh Snowden of St Albans Striders (27.23) 1st woman – Freya Weddell of St Albans Striders (28.34) 2nd woman – our very own Hannah Wardley of Chiltern Harriers (30.50) 3rd woman – Martha Lloyd of Oxford City (31.51) 1st junior man – Jack Turner (28.25) 1st junior woman – Rebecca Lawson (39.39) 1st M40 – Tom Dixon (28.42) 1st F35 – Anna Housley (35.37) 1st M50 – Alistair Melville-Smith (29.48) 1st F45 – Mairead O’Rourke (34.45) 1st M60 – David Smith (35.42) 1st F55 – Sophie Barnard (36.24) In the team competition St Albans Striders were the first male team, Chiltern Harriers took the award in the women’s competition. And finally, in the Hertfordshire champs, Chiltern Harriers women took the top two steps of the podium. Susan Scollan was first in 36.40; Sylvia Moss second in 37.02; and Celia Findlay (Dacorum) in third in 39.55. In the men’s race Robert Hogg won in 30.05; Graham Collett and Richard Moss, both of Chiltern Harriers, were second and third in 31.53 and 32.36. Last weekend brought some local classics: the Run Prestwood 10k and the Marlow 5 on Sunday 10 May. In Prestwood Jen Bizley was second woman in 46.08, joined by Abi Askey in third (48.10). There were great results: for Graham Collett (41.34); Allan Cairns (43.49); Ben Hannen (44.30); Tim Margetts (45.05); Tom Powell (48.27); Cath Holloway (48.34) and Heidi Folkard (51.40). Well done, all! In Marlow Richard Moss led the Harriers home in 32.42. He was joined by: Carys Evans (33.24); Kingsley Nanton (33.44); Jessica Moss (41.46); Simac Konkader (40.41) and Sarah Stewart (48.49). Dom Baker ran a PB of almost 2 minutes in the Oxford Town and Gown on Sunday 10 May, clocking a brilliant time of 37.40. And in something totally different Patrick Barrett took a little saunter around the Chiltern Hills 100k ultra on 9 May. I feel tired just thinking about it. Patrick did brilliantly to finish in 13.06.45. And finally, yesterday Neil Turner was up in Nottingham racing at Outlaw Sprint triathlon, a qualifier for next year’s world champs in Hamburg. Neil had possibly his strongest 750m swim ever, coming out of the water in 6th place in his age category. The 20km ride saw him rise to 4th place. 2km into the 5km run saw him take the lead and he continued to pull away for the remaining 3km to cross the line first in the wave (18:33 for the 5km), to win the age group by 2 and a half minutes and bag a place at the world champs.
