Good Afternoon, Race Report fans, on the 70th anniversary of the first sub-4 minute mile by Roger Bannister at Oxford’s Iffley Road Track. It is great to see that our very own Sue Slade was here joining in the celebrations at the Community Mile today. Meanwhile, here at Race Report HQ we are looking forward to watching runners put through their paces over 5 miles at Pednor this evening. Make sure you check back here for the results. However, even without Pednor 5 to write about, there’s still some great action to report upon from the Bank Holiday weekend. There were course PBs for Felix Danielli (20.04 at Hunstanton) and Ian Lawson (20.55 at Quaker’s Walk) at parkrun on Saturday 4 May. In a very different kind of event Jamie Reeves took on the Mapledurham 'Backyard Ultra' - one of those infamous ultra formats where the winner (and, in fact, only finisher) is the last person standing in a challenge where you 'simply' have to be able to be ready to step up to the line every hour, on the hour to complete (in this case) a 4 mile circuit. While Jamie struggled with cramping hamstrings he crewed for a friend, in what would have still been a long and gruelling day!
Yesterday, Sunday 5 May, Archie Bellamy made his debut in CHAC colours at the Great Birmingham Half Marathon, clocking a time of 1.50.01 on a pretty warm day. Further afield, it was a case of ‘hot and hilly, allez, allez allez!’ for five Harriers in the Biarritz Half. Aran Davidson came home in 5th place in a time of 1.17.37, joined by Glen Martin (1.52.11); Ed Wright (1.57.18); Matt Lawrence (2.02.53); and Matt Channer (2.12.28). James and Lindsay Turner were also in action on foreign soil, completing the Copenhagen Marathon in 3.35.51 and 4.25.57, respectively. Moving on to today, Abi Askey made her marathon debut at the MK Marathon in a time of 3.39.40, while Ash Finch stormed away with second place in the half marathon event in 1.13.58. If you’d like to support Abi’s fundraising efforts for F.E.A.S.T. - a not-for-profit supporting the parents and carers of people with eating disorders - you can do so here. PLEASE book your tickets to the Club Awards Evening & Social on Saturday 18 May. Ticket sales will close at 1800 this coming Friday, 10 May. COMING UP LOCALLY: graded open track meets at Watford and Oxford, Run Prestwood, Marlow 5, the Buckingham 10k, Black to the Trails, Bucks Track and Field Champs (entries close today), Compton Downland Challenge, the Green Belt Relay, kick off of the Southern Athletics League, Blenheim 7k, Youth Development League and the Ridge Off-roader.
