Good Evening, Race Report fans from a peaceful Race Report HQ. This will be the last report of 2022, so I will take this opportunity to wish you all a restful and joyful holiday period and many a PB in 2023. To all the coaches, committee members, qualified officials, team captains / managers and other volunteers who make our Club the force-to-be-reckoned-with that it is: a heartfelt thank you from all of us for the time and care that you devote. We’d be lost without you.
A special festive edition of Race Report brings you the results of this year's Bran Tub Relay.
Several Chiltern youngsters were taking part in the Southern Inter Counties championships at Oxford Horspath on Saturday. This is a high calibre meeting with some of the strongest counties in the country involved. On a very cold but sunny day, Buckinghamshire won the U17 Women’s race convincingly with two Chiltern runners amongst the scorers, and two others in the top thirty. The U13 Girls also featured a strong Chiltern presence with all four Buckinghamshire scorers coming from the club. Kara Gorman was tenth, Evelyn Wildman 24th, Nia Clarke 33rd and Carys Jones 66th. The team were sixth.
Tom Ford had a good run for Hertfordshire in the U13 Boys race coming 18th and was second Herts scorer in the team that came fifth. Amongst the Bucks team that was eighth, Charlie Quantrill was second scorer in 38th, Felix Danielli third scorer in 57th and Jacon McCall fourth scorer in 82nd. Isaac McCall was 106th. Emily Ford ran well for ninth and was the leading Herts runner in the U15 Girls race. Lily Jessop-Tranter running for Bucks was 80th. The Bucks U15 Boys were twelfth and saw a good Chiltern turnout: Rory Hilton was second scorer in 71st, James Holdsworth third in 74th, and Aidan Suleyman fourth in 89th. Isaac Collier was 105th and Soren Fox 109th. Alex Hughes started the race but soon had to pull out after being very badly spiked early on. The Bucks U17 Women had a great race with Maddie Hughes first scorer in fifth, Frankie Baxter second scorer in seventh. Also running very well were Allegra Massey fifth Bucks in 17th and Ellie Shield sixth Bucks in 28th, emphasising the strength of the county in this age group currently. In the U17 Men’s race Archie Pinder ran well to be second Herts scorer in 18th. The team was fourth. Euan Pinder was sixth Herts finisher in 52nd. Well, it definitely is beginning to look a lot like Christmas now. I hope you are managing to keep yourself snug and warm this evening, as we are here in the Bates Motel.
Several Chiltern athletes took part for their schools in the English Schools Cross Country Cup Final at the Grammar School at Leeds on Saturday. The highlight was a victory for the Dr Challoner’s High School Senior Girls team, composed entirely of Chiltern athletes. See Senior Girls race on Vinco
There were several local schools that had made the final, with hefty contributions from Chiltern Harriers. On fast, firm, gently undulating courses the weather was dry so good conditions for fast running. Junior Girls DCHS featured good efforts from Evelyn Wildman (42nd) and Maya Davis (63rd). Maya had been ill all week and would normally have been much higher. The DCHS team was 18th from 27. Junior Boys The DCGS team was a creditable fifth, helped by good efforts from Charlie Quantrill (15th), Felix Danielli (41st), Isaac McCall (95th) and Eddie O’Brien (131st). Luke Coultate had to pull out with illness. Inter Girls Alice Peckham was second Chesham Grammar scorer in 54th place in the team that came 20th. Inter Boys All five DCGS boys in the team that finished eighth are Chiltern runners. Alex Hughes was 13th, Daniel Munn 44th, Rory Hilton 58th, Aidan Suleyman 78th, and Mattie Gemmell 136th. Senior Girls The DCHS Senior Girls had great runs to secure a win with 71 points, ahead of Bradford Grammar on 84 and Thomas Telford, Shropshire on 86. Maddie Hughes had a great run to be second with Frankie Baxter fifth, Ellie Shield 15th, Lesedi Nkoane 49th and Hannah Ashby 60th. The Wycombe High team that came eighth featured good efforts from Jo Snelling (66th), Tia Lomas (78th) and Sofia Lomas (80th). See Senior Girls Race on Vinco Senior Boys The Chesham Grammar team did well to be 12th, helped by strong runs from Archie Pinder (23rd), Euan Pinder (40th), and Sammy Bennetts (57th). The DCGS team were badly affected by illness and injury and only fielded three runners. Isaac Jessop-Tranter was 101st and Max Baxter 130th but Thomas Askey (injury) and Thomas Redmond (illness) could not run. Tom Emery was 28th running for Harrow School. Chiltern Harriers remained competitive at Stopsley Park Luton on Saturday and go into the penultimate match still holding a slight lead. The club were second on the day to Milton Keynes who are now just 34 points behind. There were individual wins for Kara Gorman and Emily Ford and team wins for the U15 girls and U17 men. There were 62 Chiltern finishers. On a chilly, grey day, there were solid performances all round on the mostly flat courses despite several athletes away at the Schools Cup final and others not available due to illness. The U11s did well with the girls having their best match so far. Soraya Roughton was fourth, Annie-Rose Quantrill fifth, Emilia Ingham 16th and Mala Bahia 17th to tie with MK for the win. The team are second after three matches. The boys also did well with Thomas Living having his best run yet to be second. Hector Gamblen was sixth and Jack Rogers 16th. The boys were second on the day and are second overall.
The U13 girls had just two runners but Kara Gorman with the win and Nia Clarke, third, still scored enough points to be third. The team are third overall. The U13 boys were similarly short but Kit Dixon (16th), Jacob McCall (18th), and Theo Roughton (26th) all ran well for sixth. The team are second league-to-date and should be stronger next time. The U15 girls had a really good team out and scored a team win courtesy of race winner Emily Ford, Lucy Wilkinson, having her best race of the season to be third, Marlie Nkoane eighth, and Katie Allsop 11th. Also running well were Lily Jessop-Tranter (14th), Jocelyn Davies (15th), Rebecca Lawson (26th), and Keya Kara (34th). The girls are narrowly second to MK after three matches. James Holdsworth ran well for third in the U15 boys race and the remaining scorers were Zach Cleary (16th), Danny Carruthers (21st), and Charlie De Sousa (25th). The boys were second and are second with two matches remaining. Charlotte Docwra was the only Chiltern junior woman but ran well for 14th. The team are sixth so far but should be much stronger next time and could still get on the podium. The U17 Men scored a win despite only fielding three runners. Alden Collier in third, Matt Evans seventh, and Leon Doran ninth all ran well. The Senior Women had a good team out and were second on the day. They still lead going into Match 4. Hannah Wardley continued her consistent season in sixth and was backed up by Bex Nkoane 11th, Finola Watkins 18th, Ellie Bates 25th, Katie Royals 32nd and Ali Young 36th. Completing the team were Fiona Kelleher 38th, Cathy Holloway 59th, Helen Cholawo 60th, Sylvia Moss 64th, Kate Paxton 92nd, Jennifer Webb 96th, Miriam Kempson 107th, Tamsin Finch 112th, Kathy Jessop 128th, and Fiona Calder 153rd. The Vets foursome of Bex, Ali, Cathy and Helen were third and the team are third overall. The Senior Men ran well but were up against very strong teams from MK and Bedford and had to be content with third. Scorers were Richard Slade, second, Will Brown third, George Brown fourth, Aran Davidson 17th, James Palmer 22nd, Louis Peterson 23rd, Tom Dixon 34th, Alex Paul 76th, Neil Turner 95th and Michael Turney 103rd. Also running well were Richard Moss (117th), Jonny Slade (129th), David Williams (166th), James Grant (170th), Neil Bates (202nd), and Trevor Brawn (229th). The U20 duo of James and Louis were second and third individually and second team. The team have a big lead overall. The Vets team were fifth: Tom, Neil, Michael, Richard. The Vets are third. Nick Hughes leads the Vet 50 standings as does Trevor Brawn in the Vet 70s. The season looks to be heading for an exciting conclusion and it will need good turnouts at the last two matches to ensure the club can compete to retain the league title. Match 4 is at Campbell Park, Milton Keynes on January 14th. Good Evening, Race Report fans from a Race Report HQ which is currently feeling pretty chilled. Although apparently there’s a football match in a bit and I guess that might alter things… Before we get into this week’s Report, a huge well done to Harriers competing in yesterday’s Chiltern League and the ESAA English Schools Cup Final. There were some brilliant results from CHAC at both events. A special thank you to those who took their stint marshalling yesterday at the Chiltern League: as you’ll know, this one marshalling spot each year is one of the few asks that the League makes upon us as a Club, so we really do appreciate people giving up their time to help out.
