SIAB Cross Country Maddie Hughes in the Intermediate Girls and Alden Collier in the Intermediate Boys were representing England Schools at the SIAB International at Carmarthen on Saturday. The match features eight runners from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and is for the Junior and Intermediate age groups. On a fast course Maddie had a good run to be ninth, and seventh England runner in a field of over thirty. Alden suffered with a stomach muscle problem and finished 31st in his race. Both get to keep their England kit from this prestigious high level event. National Primary Schools Cross Country There were two Chiltern winners at this event which has races for years 5, 6 and 7, and features teams from all over the country. The meeting was held at Market Harborough in Leicestershire. The Bucks Swans team was organised by our own Becky McCall and the county did very well. Kara Gorman won the Year 6 Girls race comfortably after a poor start and Tom Ford, running for Herts, won the Year 7 Boys race. There were several other Chiltern runners taking part over a simple, flattish course in lovely spring sunshine. The Year 6 Girls also featured good runs by Maya Davis (7th), Nia Clarke (23rd), and Carys Jones (79th). There were 149 finishers in total. There were 138 runners in the Year 6 Boys race in which Jacob McCall was 51st, Luke Coultate 80th and Isaac McCall 82nd. Unlike Kara, Tom Ford had the closest of battles, sharing the same time as the his fast-finishing rival and being awarded joint first, both well ahead of third. Also for Herts Jack Martin ran well to be 15th. Charlie Quantrill was 33rd running for Bucks Swans with Hugo Mundy 51st and George Mawby 91st. The Bucks Swans lads were silver medallists. Evelyn Wildman was 38th in the Year 7 Girls race, third Bucks Swans girl home. The Team were an excellent third. Albert Rushton was Chiltern’s only runner in the Year 5 Boys race in 125th place. Happy Mother’s Day to all our running Mums, Mums of runners and Mums-what-are-both. I hope you have had a fabulous day and been thoroughly spoilt. You deserve it.
Race Report HQ is a very chilled location this evening and we hope that your HQ is similarly relaxed. A huge well done first of all to Maddie Hughes and Alden Collier, who represented the English Schools Athletics Association yesterday in Wales. An ‘official’ read-out to follow, no doubt, but it certainly is brilliant to see Harriers amongst the best of the best. This is effectively the last week of the winter training sessions and, with the extra hour of light in the evenings, we will take full advantage to do more off road training sessions.

The Intermediate Girls were the first race off on a 3.8k circuit and Maddie had another great run to finish sixth, securing her England spot for next week. The most prestigious cross country meeting of the season, the National Inter Counties, took place at a sunny Prestwold Hall, near Loughborough on Saturday. Thirty-Five Chiltern athletes were representing their counties. Underfoot conditions were quite good but there were still some very muddy sections to negotiate on the tough undulating circuit around the attractive park. Highlight of the day was a win for Buckinghamshire’s U13 Girls with Kara Gorman having another great run to be sixth, and second scorer. For Bucks Alden Collier had a solid run to be 16th. Isaac Jessop-Tranter had a good outing to be third scorer in 79th, and Alex Hughes was fourth scorer in 97th. Max Baxter was 182nd and Rory Hilton 233rd. For Herts Archie Pinder in 25th, and Euan Pinder in 28th both had great runs, being first and second Herts scorers. In the team stakes Herts were 9th, Bucks 12th. Bucks U17 women were 8th and featured a strong Chiltern presence. Maddie Hughes had another top ten finish in a major race to be ninth. Holly Henderson was third scorer in 72nd and Abbie Henderson fifth finisher in 109th. Charlotte Docwra was 111th, Ellie Shield 138th and Alice Brown 162nd.
