Team South Bucks, a composite team featuring U17 and U20 athletes from Chiltern Harriers and Wycombe Phoenix, took part in their first Youth Development League match of the season at Eton on Sunday.
On a grey, warm, muggy afternoon the South Bucks athletes put in a great performance to come second behind Windsor but ahead of Reading, Aylesbury and Oxford. The next meeting is at Eton on July 25th where the South Bucks team will again hope to do well in a match that will feature a full timetable. Seven Chiltern Harriers athletes have been invited to take part for Buckinghamshire Schools in the prestigious English Schools Track and Field Championships to be held in Manchester on 9th, 10th, 11th July.
This year because of covid restrictions the normal two-day event where county schools teams travel together and spend a two-night stay near the stadium is not happening. Instead athletes travel up on the day and the event is much closer to a normal track meeting. Also the number of athletes involved is restricted to the top 16 ranked in each event in the national rankings with a maximum of three per event per county. Normally Bucks would send 40 athletes to the championships; this year 36 have made the cut. Seniors compete on Friday 9th, Intermediates on Saturday 10th and Juniors on Sunday 11th. Senior Girls Lily Holt is running 100m hurdles, her third championships after competing in high jump in previous years. Intermediate Girls Holly Henderson takes part in 1500m steeplechase. Holly is ranked fourth going into the championships, having run 800m two years ago. Chisom Nwafor gained the entry standard in 200m, long jump and shot, and is selected for long jump where she is ranked top 16. Abbie Henderson narrowly misses out despite being ranked top ten, with three other Bucks girls ahead of her in the list. Junior Boys Alden Collier is top ranked in the UK at 800m and 1500m and is choosing 1500m along with other debutants Euan Pinder and Archie Pinder who are also in the top twelve. Isaac Jessop-Tranter goes into 800m ranked sixth nationally. Well done to all those selected and good luck. More great Chiltern performances on the track at the end of a busy month
England Athletics U23 Championships Harry Cox did well to qualify for the EA U23 Champs 800m at Bedford on the 19th following his excellent 1.49.79 at Watford recently. In a straight final, a tactical affair went through the bell in a slow 58 seconds. A fast second lap saw Harry finish a creditable sixth in 1.53.78. Southern Athletics League Richard Slade, Ian Lawson and Alicia Bushell went to Abingdon to take part in the Southern Athletics League on the 20th for the Chiltern/Aylesbury composite team. Ian tackled 800m and 1500m and scored PBs of 2.25.80 and 4.56.12. Alicia ran a season’s best of 5.10.01 in 1500m and Richard scored a PB of 15.42.27 in 5000m. BMC Eltham On Wednesday 23rd U20 Angus Williams and U17 Oakley Denson made the trip to south east London for the British Milers Club Regional meeting, both coming away with PBs. Angus was seventh in the 1500m A race in 4.00.53 a narrow PB – surely sub 4 is achievable. Oakley was fifth in the 800m B race in a strong new best of 1.58.39. Loughborough Open Also on the 23rd Loughborough student Emily Alderson (U20) ran 1500m at her local open, a couple of seconds off her season’s best with 5.12.34. BMC Trafford Adam Day won the 800m C race at a BMC Gold Standard at Trafford on Tuesday 29th with 1.54.40. Good Evening from Race Report HQ, where the exciting news of the weekend is that I have ‘mastered’ tree surgery and created some half-decent elderflower cordial in the process. Fortunately, the news from the roads, tracks and trails is far more exciting.

Several young Chiltern Harriers were taking part for their schools in the English Schools Track and Field Cup at Hillingdon on Tuesday.
In normal years a county round leads to regional finals and a national final, but due to covid, this year sees just county rounds only. The age groups cross normal boundaries: so Juniors are years 7 and 8 (second year U13s and first year U15s), whilst Intermediates are years 9 and 10 (second year U15s and first year U17s). This meant some interesting match ups took place. There were many excellent performances and, as athletes are required to tackle a track event and a field event, several athletes gained good experience in events that they don’t normally attempt. The scoring features a decathlon style scoring system so level of performance more important than finishing position. Junior Girls Olivia Clarke and Alice Peckham both won their 800m races in good times for Chesham Grammar in 2.36.4 and 2.39.9 respectively. The track season is hotting up with several events taking place in the middle of the month. Chelmsford Open Isaac Jessop-Tranter dipped under Junior Boys 800m English Schools qualifying for the second time with 2.04.33 at a track night in Chelmsford on June 9th. BMC Grand Prix Three Chiltern athletes were in action in the prestigious British Milers Club Grand Prix at Watford on Saturday 12th. All were tackling 800m. In the Mens E race U23 Harry Cox shattered his PB with a win in a new best of 1.49.79. Harry will go to the England Athletics U23 Champs with confidence. Next up was U23 Cameron Reid in the F race who started well but faded in the last 80m to a solid 1.55.43. Finally Senior Man Will Perkin completed his third race in a week in the D race with his opening 800m of the season. Will came home in 1.52.95.
Herts Schools Track and Field Championships Whilst most Chiltern U15 and U17 athletes were competing at Milton Keynes in the Bucks Schools Champs on Saturday 12th, a small number took part for their schools in the Hertfordshire Schools event at Jarman Park, Hemel Hempstead. Jemma Thomson ran a great race to win the Inter Girls 200m title in a great time of 26.70. In the Junior Girls Izzy Martin won the bronze medal in the 800m in 2.30.5. In Long Jump Mila Luker did well to record a PB of 4.42m to be sixth but back pain spoilt her 100m chances and after a good heat Mila was seventh in the final in 13.8. South of England U20/Senior Mens Championships Adam Day won his first major title with a great win in the SEAA Senior Men’s 800m at Bedford on Sunday 13th. Adam held off Ted Higgins from Bexley to take the win in 1.54.47. In a field of only four Seb Mills was fourth in 2.05.82. Part of this meeting features the SEAA U15/U17 3000m Championships. Isaac Jessop-Tranter finished in silver medal spot in the U15 race in 9.54.97, a very good time on an extremely hot day. This evening Race Report is celebrating the return of parkrun in England. On Friday 11 June parkrun made the announcement that there are now sufficient permissions in place from landowners across the country for events to return on 26 June. And whilst this Race Reporter is very excited for the events’ return, she is wondering whether she will be able to get up in time on a Saturday morning… Last weekend was an impressive weekend for Chiltern Harriers AC’s triathletes. On 5 June, Patrick Barrett completed the TriathlonX “FullX” event. Described as “the world’s toughest ‘Iron Man’, as voted for by 220 Mag, the event takes in 140 miles with almost 17,000 ft of climbing in the beautiful Lake District. It makes me feel a little dizzy just thinking about it. Patrick finished in a total time of 19.43.09, completing 2.4 miles of swimming in Lake Windermere, 112 miles and 12,000 ft of cycle route and a marathon taking in Scafell Pike (almost 5,000 ft). All I can say is ‘tough as nails’.
On Sunday 6 June, Nick Hughes took part in the British Championships for Standard Triathlon in Leeds, clocking a time of 2.16.54 for the 1.5k swim, 36.2k bike and 10k run. Well done! If last weekend was the weekend of Triathlon, this weekend was (almost) all about half marathons. On Saturday 12 June Matt Lawrence and Roger Ellerby took on the distance at Dorney Lake, finishing in very respectable times of 1.51.20 and 2.10.57, respectively. Today, Sunday 13 June, Tom Powell was in half marathon action during the Cheltenham Running Festival, achieving a great time of 1.35.33. Today was also the day of the (always) hilly and (often) hot St Albans Half. This Race Reporter almost can’t believe she is writing this: our very own Aran Davidson was the overall winner of the event, coming home first out of more than 1,500 runners in a brilliant time of 1.12.28. Mike ‘Tiny’ Turney also made an impressive return to racing, coming home 2nd in age category in a time of 1.26.37. There were also brilliant runs from: Simon Conway (1.47.34); Claire Dickinson (2.05.25); Rik Edwards (1.56.54); Fiona Kelleher (1.48.32); Richard Lloyd (2.11.52); Adam Shute (1.22.54); Gemma Stockwell (2.03.56); Tom Wright (1.39.17) and Ed Wright (1.42.23). What brilliant times and a brilliant turnout by Team Green. And finally, Chiltern’s very own ultra man extraordinaire, Dave Bellamy tackled the gruelling South Downs Way 100 (miler). Starting on Saturday 12 June, Dave completed the Centurion event from Winchester to Eastbourne in 26.07.05. Huge congratulations, Dave! Tuesday 15 June - Session 1:
