The National Inter Counties were held as usual at Prestwold Hall near Loughborough on Saturday. On a grey, mild day, the tented area became very muddy very quickly but the course wasn’t too bad –some areas however becoming more treacherous as the day wore on. Kara Gorman topped off a great season with her best ever result, winning the Under 13 Girls race after two bronzes at the Southern and National Championships. There were over thirty Chiltern athletes taking part for Buckinghamshire or Hertfordshire and first up were the U20 Men. There were three Chiltern runners in the Bucks team of five and James Palmer was the first placed in 59th. Laurie Gawne was 135th and Henry Webb 158th. The Bucks team was 20th.
Next up were the Under 13 Girls and on a long tough course with plenty of mud, Kara was a convincing winner and the only Buckinghamshire medallist of the day. Second Bucks scorer was Maya Davis in 56th, Megan Lockwood fourth scorer in 101st, Evelyn Wildman fifth Bucks finisher in 114th, and Nia Clarke sixth finisher in 153rd. The Bucks team was 14th. The Under 15 Boys Bucks team was led in by Alex Hughes in 28th. James Holdsworth was fourth scorer in 156th, Aidan Suleyman fifth finisher in 160th, and Dylan Rossi eight finisher in 301st. The Bucks team was 21st and Callum Powell had a good run for Hertfordshire to be 145th. The U17 Women had a strong Chiltern presence and were led home by Maddie Hughes in 17th. Ellie Shield was fourth scorer in 81st, Frankie Baxter fifth finisher in 100th, Lesedi Nkoane sixth finisher in 167th, and Maddie Rae seventh finisher in 182nd. The team was seventh. The U17 Men also saw good Chiltern representation with Thomas Remond leading Bucks finisher in 26th. Matt Evans made a good county debut as fourth scorer in 154th and Sammy Bennetts was sixth finisher in 215th. The team was 15th. For Herts Ash Finch was 91st and Archie Pinder 122nd. Leon Doran had to drop out mid race. The Herts team was 16th. Tom Ford had a great run for Herts Under 13 Boys to be tenth. Charlie Quantrill was second Bucks runner home in 45th, Felix Danielli fourth scorer in 111th, Isaac McCall seventh finisher in 226th and Jacob McCall eighth in 244th. The Bucks team was 15th but Tom’s Herts were team gold medallists. The penultimate race saw Bucks Under 15 Girls team seventh but the leading Chiltern runner was Emily Ford in an excellent 14th for Herts. For Bucks Lucy Wilkinson was second scorer in 28th, Marlie Nkoane fifth finisher in 123rd, and Issy Robinson eighth finisher in 207th. There were four Chiltern men in the Bucks Senior Men’s team. Richard Slade achieved his best ever Inter Counties finish to be leading Bucks runner in 23rd and Will Brown had an excellent run to be second Bucks scorer in 45th. Aran Davidson made his way through the field to be third Bucks scorer in 139th. George Brown was well placed early on but, suffering with a cold all week, had to drop out. The team was 17th. Twenty-one Chiltern Harriers took part in the National Cross Country Championships at Bolesworth Castle in Cheshire on Saturday. Conditions at the gently undulating and fast course in the grounds of the castle, were good on a dry but blustery day. Again the main highlight for the club was U13 Girl Kara Gorman, adding to her medal collection with an excellent bronze. Although the club had runners in most of the races the only complete team was the Under 15 Boys who were a creditable ninth. Earlier the U17 Women featured good runs from Maddie Hughes in 21st and Ellie Shield in 36th. The Under 15 Boys were next and Alex Hughes led the way in 23rd. Daniel Munn in 116th, Callum Powell in 130th, and Aidan Suleyman in 137th completed the scoring with James Holdsworth 193rd from 289.
Kara again ran a spirited race in the Under 13 Girls beating the Southern Champs winner in the process and adding to the bronze she won at that championships. Kara made her way through the field to finish very strongly. Evelyn Wildman was the other U13 girl, running well for 108th. There were 253 finishers. The Under 17 men’s race saw Archie Pinder 36th with twin Euan in 138th. The Under 13 Boys was also a twins effort with Isaac McCall 204th, and Jacob 206th being the Chiltern presence. In the Under 15 Girls race Lucy Wilkinson was best placed Chiltern finisher in 46th. Issy Robinson had a good run for 99th from 285. The Junior Men packed well with Louis Peterson 72nd, James Palmer 84th and Alex Aldred 85th. The Senior Men also featured a trio and Richard Slade had a great run to be 29th on the long 12k course. George Brown also ran well for 39th and Will Brown was 73rd from the biggest field of the day of 1471 runners. Amongst the photos is a picture of Richard, George and Will at the National Cross Country at Nottingham in 2014 where Richard was 112th, Will 117th, and George 242nd. Hard work and commitment have seen all three move up to the strong performances seen on Saturday. Chiltern Harriers saved their best league performance of the season to the final match to confirm the retention of the overall league title. Conditions at Keysoe Equestrian Centre were dry, still and mild, and the gently undulating courses were firm and fast for the most part. The watersplash created a great focal point for spectators. Photos from Gary Mitchell The U11 Girls have battled hard all season and were fourth on the day thanks to Annie-Rose Quantrill (4th), Mala Bahia (24th) and Emilia Ingham (26th). The team were second overall for the season and Soraya Roughton was fourth individual. The Under 11 Boys were second on the day and are second overall. The scorers on Saturday were Thomas Living in second, Hector Gamblen 9th and Zac Taylor 13th. Completing the team were Jack Rogers (15th), and Jack Dixon 25th. Also doing well were guest runners Arthur Small in 7th and Dexter Kahn in 34th. Thomas won individual silver for the season. Kara Gorman completed a clean sweep of five wins in the Under 13 Girls race and was aided in the scoring by Maya Davis (3rd), Megan Lockwood (6th) and Evelyn Wildman (8th). Carys Jones was 21st and ended up 13th in the overall standings. The girls had a big win on the day and are confirmed as league winners. The Under 13 Boys were second on the day and stayed second overall, just ten points behind winners Dacorum. Thomas Reynolds was fourth, Charlie Quantrill 7th, George Mawby 18th, Jacob McCall 21st, Isaac McCall 22nd, Luke Coultate 25th and Lenny Brooks-Klingenschmid 34th. Overall Jacob McCall was ninth and Kit Dixon tenth. In another good battle with Milton Keynes, the Chiltern U15 Girls were second by three points and ended up with overall silver by just six. Lucy Wilkinson continued her great form to come second and was backed up by Issy Robinson (5th), Izzy Martin (8th), and Marlie Nkoane (10th). Also running well were Alice Peckham (16th), Katie Allsop (19th), Jocelyn Davies (24th), Rebecca Lawson (26th), Keya Kara (32nd) and Lydia Cross (36th). Individually Emily Ford had already won the title. Lucy Wilkinson was 4th, Katie Allsop 11th, Jocelyn Davies 13th and Rebecca Lawson 16th. Alex Hughes won the Under 15 Boys race convincingly and James Holdsworth was an excellent second. Rory Hilton in 7th and Callum Powell in 9th completed the scoring in a team win. Also running well were Aidan Suleyman (11th), Toby Pullen (15th), Dylan Rossi (19th), Charlie De Sousa (28th), Danny Carruthers (30th), and Soren Fox (33rd). The team ended up second. The Junior Women’s team was third on the day, ending up fourth overall. Maddie Hughes was 8th, Ellie Shield 9th, Lesedi Nkoane 13th, Jo Snelling (22nd), Hannah Ashby (24th), and Ellie Gowers (36th). Ash Finch gained his first Chiltern League win in the U17 Men’s race with Archie Pinder a close second. A strong team was completed by Leon Doran (7th), Sammy Bennetts (8th) and Matt Evans (13th). The team won on the day and completed the season convincing winners. Individually Ash was bronze medallist, Matt was sixth and Leon eighth. The Senior Women were second on the day but did enough to stay ahead for the overall win. Hannah Wardley had a great run to be third with Bex Nkoane 6th, Ellie Bates 11th, Katie Royals 26th, Lou Martin 42nd and Abi Askey 53rd. Completing the team were Tessa Passey (56th), Sylvia Moss (68th), Lyndsey Bill (81st), Miriam Kempson (96th), Fiona Williams (110th), and Fiona Calder (132nd). Individually Hannah Wardley was overall league winner with Katie Royals 9th. The Vets were fourth on the day and ended up bronze medallists. Scorers on Saturday were Bex, Lou, Abi and Tessa. In the Vets categories Cathy Holloway won the Vet 55 group with Miriam sixth. Abi Askey was fourth Vet 45. A great performance by the Senior Men was their best of the season to score a team win and perhaps best ever. Richard Slade took his first Chiltern race win with George Brown close behind in second. Completing the scoring were Will Brown (4th), Aran Davidson (10th), Tom Emery (16th), James Palmer (20th), Nick Hughes (24th), Adam Shute (32nd), James Repper (35th) and Tom Dixon (41st). Also running in an excellent team were Iain Ward (42nd), Alex Paul (53nd), Neil Turner (54th), Alastair Melville-Smith (83rd), Jonny Slade (114th), Ben Hannen (127th), Ed Wright (170th), Neil Bates (183rd), and Trevor Brawn (220th). The Seniors completed the season in second as did the vets. The scoring vets quartet on Saturday that also took the match win were Nick Hughes, James Repper, Tom Dixon and Neil Turner. Tom Emery and James Palmer scored good Under 20 points and the U20 team were convincing winners after five matches. Individually Richard Slade was second, George Brown third, Will Brown fourth, and Aran Davidson ninth. Tom Dixon was Vet 45 bronze medallist and Nick Huges won the Vet 50 category with Neil Turner fourth. Trevor Brawn was the winner of the Vet 70 age group. James Palmer was U20 silver medallist with Louis Peterson winning bronze. A great support group of team managers, coaches and parent helpers were very important all season in getting everyone to the right place at the right time and being supportive and encouraging. The Chiltern Social Committee organised a great celebration on Saturday evening at Chesham Cricket Club to celebrate another fantastic club campaign. Bucks Schools Cross Country took place in glorious sunshine at Stowe School on Wednesday. There were several Chiltern Harriers athletes competing for their schools and attempting to gain selection to represent Bucks Schools in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Nottingham on March 18th. Year 7s ran for selection for the Primary Schools and Year 7 event in Prestwold Hall at the end of March.
Minor Girls The Year 7 (Minor) Girls race was a predictable Chiltern 1-2-3 with Kara Gorman winning from Maya Davis and Nia Clarke. Carys Jones ran well for seventh from 119 finishers. Minor Boys In the Minor Boys Luke Coultate was fifth, Jacob McCall eighth, Isaac McCall 11th, and Kit Dixon 28th. Junior Girls The Year 8 and 9s run as Juniors and the very high quality girls race saw Issy Robinson fifth, Marlie Nkoane seventh, Megan Lockwood tenth, Katie Allsop 12th, Abi Masters 27th, Keya Kara 43rd, and Lydia Cross 45th. Junior Boys Billed as 4k, the Junior Boys turned out to be about 4.8k, a tough ask on a hilly course. Thomas Reynolds was an excellent fourth, Aidan Suleyman eighth, Charlie Quantrill 12th, Felix Danielli 16th, George Mawby 18th, Eddie O’Brien 23rd, Zach Cleary 24th, Dylan Rossi 28th, and Theo Roughton 58th. There were 135 finishers. Inter Girls The Intermediates ran on the same 4k course as the junior boys but added in were the Senior Girls to make a fuller race. Lucy Wilkinson continued her great season to secure the win, Also running well in a race with several Chiltern girls competing were Lesedi Nkoane seventh, Lily Jessop-Tranter ninth, Olivia Clarke tenth, Jo Snelling 12th, Alice Peckham 13th, Rebecca Lawson 18th, Jocelyn Davies 20th, Sofia Lomas 25th, Charlotte Hewson 36th, and Ellie Gowers 38th. Inter Boys The Inter Boys and Senior Boys tackled a 5.6k route. The Inter race saw good packing from Chiltern athletes with Archie Pinder second, Alex Hughes third, Euan Pinder sixth, Daniel Munn seventh, Callum Powell 12th, Toby Pullen 13th, Rory Hilton 14th, and Max Roughton 16th. Senior Girls Just ten Senior Girls faced the starter. Maddie Hughes ran well for second, Ellie Shield third, Maddie Rae fifth and Charlotte Docwra ninth. Senior Boys Sammy Bennetts was an excellent third in Senior Boys and Tom Askey tenth struggling with painful knees. Several Chiltern Harriers took part for their universities at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championships at Pembrey Country Park near Swansea on Saturday. In BUCS cross country there is a Long A race and Short B race for both men and women. The Long A race for the men features the top six cross country runners at each university, the A race for the women the top four. The B races include all other good runners at each university so are usually bigger fields, and are very high quality at the front end. Will Brown was part of the mighty Birmingham University A team. Will had an injury niggle recently and missed a few weeks training but ran well to be sixth Birmingham finisher in 45th. Alex Aldred ran for Bristol University and was 149th. There were 256 finishers and 41 complete teams. Birmingham were narrowly second to Loughborough, Nottingham 13th and Bristol 21st. Jamie Carruthers ran for Bristol in the 8k Men’s B race, coming in a creditable 323rd out of 540. In the Women’s 6k B race Liv Cameron had an excellent run for Nottingham University to be 63rd, and the Lockwood sisters were in evidence, Soraya finishing 218th for Exeter University, and Jinaan coming in 339th for Southampton University. There were 406 finishers. Kara Gorman continued her great winter form to win the individual bronze medal in the U13 Girls race at the Southern Cross Country Championships at Beckenham on Saturday. Kara led home a strong Chiltern quartet that was fourth from twenty-two complete teams. Maya Davis was 27th, Nia Clarke 33rd and Evelyn Wildman 69th to complete the scoring. Earlier the Under 15 Boys had put in a good performance to finish seventh team from twenty-seven. Alex Hughes was 11th, Callum Powell 46th, Daniel Munn 47th and James Holdsworth 58th.
There was a similarly good result for the Under 15 girls with Emily Ford in sixth and in-form Lucy Wilkinson in seventh both running superbly to break into the top ten. The remaining scorers in the team that came fifth from twenty-two were Issy Robinson 67th and Marlie Nkoane 74th. The girls were only fourteen points off the podium. Olivia Clarke in 104th and Rebecca Lawson in 121st also ran well. There was another top ten run from Thomas Ford on the Under 13 Boys race, finishing an excellent fifth. Thomas Reynolds continued his good big-race progress with a very good twentieth. In the Under 17 Women’s race Frankie Baxter in 16th and Ellie Shield in 22nd both had great runs. The Under 17 Men did well to come eighth team. Archie Pinder was 31st, Ash Finch 33rd, Leon Doran 56th, Sammy Bennetts 74th, Matt Evans 88th and Euan Pinder 120th. Chiltern League stalwarts Louis Peterson and James Palmer both had good runs in the U20 Men’s race, Louis finishing 24th and James 39th. Ian Lawson was 471st in the Senior Men’s race. Chiltern Harriers had a great day at Campbell Park on Saturday, winning the fourth match in the series and providing a buffer of 300 points going into the season finale at Keysoe in February. After early heavy rain the weather improved but the course became increasingly muddy and treacherous as the day wore on. The Under 11 girls began proceedings and Annie-Rose Quantrill in fourth and Soraya Roughton in sixth scored enough points to secure fourth. The team are second going into match 5. The Under 11 boys were third and are second season-to-date. Thomas Living was second, Hector Gamblen 14th, and Jack Rogers 18th, with Max MacDonald 19th, Zac Taylor 24th and Jack Dixon 36th.
Junior teams were back to more-or-less full strength and the Under 13 girls recorded a good win. Kara Gorman recorded her fourth win, thereby securing the league title. Also scoring were Maya Davis in third, Nia Clarke in fifth and Evelyn Wildman in eighth. Completing the small but talented team were Megan Lockwood in ninth and Carys Jones in 14th. After four matches the girls are narrowly second to St Albans with all to play for in the finale. Tom Ford in second led home the victorious Chiltern U13 boys contingent with Charlie Quantrill sixth, Eddie O’Brien 13th and George Mawby 14th completing the scoring. Also running well were Jacob McCall 18th, Isaac McCall 19th, Theo Roughton 23rd, Kit Dixon 24th, and Lenny Brooks-Klingenschmid 33rd. The team have a small lead going into match 5. In the Under 15 girls race Emily Ford scored a memorable win to complete four victories and clinch the overall title. Backing Emily up were Lucy Wilkinson in third, Issy Robinson seventh and Marlie Nkoane tenth. Olivia Clarke in 14th, Alice Peckham in 16th, and Rebecca Lawson in 22nd also ran well. The team were second to MK by a point and are just three points behind MK overall. Back to full strength, the Under 15 boys powered to a good win. Alex Hughes won the race with Daniel Munn third, Callum Powell fourth and James Holdsworth fifth scoring. Also well up were Rory Hilton in tenth, Aidan Suleyman 12th, Max Roughton 15th, Toby Pullen 21st, Zach Cleary 22nd, Dylan Rossi 27th, Mattie Gemmell 30th, Charlie De Sousa 34th, and Danny Carruthers 35th. The team are second overall but too far behind leaders Bedford to catch up. The Junior Women’s team won this match but are fourth overall. A place on the podium is still possible. Maddie Hughes in second, Frankie Baxter third and Ellie Shield ninth were the scorers, with Lesedi Nkoane in 14th, Hannah Ashby 19th and Ellie Gowers 30th completing the team. A small Chiltern contingent did very well at Cassiobury Park, Watford on Sunday in the Herts Cross Country Championships. In awful conditions which featured frequent heavy showers, Chiltern managed two individual wins and a team bronze. Tom Ford won gold in the Under 13 Boys race with Emily Ford also victorious in the Under 15 Girls race. Izzy Martin was ninth in the Under 15 Girls race, Callum Powell was fourth in the Under 15 Boys event and the trio of Ash Finch (5th), Leon Doran (8th) and Euan Pinder (11th) won team bronze in the U17 Men’s category. Senior Woman Hannah Wardley was seventh in her race, securing an Inter Counties spot.
Chiltern Harriers had a very successful Bucks Championships on Saturday at a grey and windy Ampthill Park in Bedfordshire. There were individual wins for Soraya Roughton (under 11 girls), Kara Gorman (under 13 girls), Maddie Hughes (under 17 women), Alex Hughes (under 15 boys), James Palmer (under 20 men), George Brown (senior men), and Nick Hughes (vet 50 men) and team wins for the Under 13 Girls, Under 17 Women, Veteran Women, Under 13 Boys, Under 15 Men, Senior Men and Veteran Men. There were also several other individual medallists and other Chiltern teams that were in the top three. Several athletes obtained qualification to take part for Buckinghamshire in the National Inter Counties Championships on March 11th at Loughborough. The courses at Ampthill were hilly and varied in terrain but generally drier than expected after recent rain. The first race was the Under 11 Girls and Soraya Roughton had a great run to win with debutant Holly Knott third, Branwen Harman ninth and Emilia Ingham tenth. The team was second.
The Under 13 Girls race was a great result for Chiltern with the club filling the first four places. The Under 15s continued the strong performances. The girls were second to the very powerful MK team. Leading the scorers was Lucy Wilkinson in fourth, backed up by Issy Robinson (ninth), Katie Allsop (tenth) and Marlie Nkoane (13th). Other good efforts came from Alice Peckham (15th), Jocelyn Davies (17th), Rebecca Lawson (20th) and Abigail Masters (28th). The Under 15 Boys gained a convincing win with Alex Hughes being individual winner and Daniel Munn (second), James Holdsworth (fourth) and Aidan Suleyman (fifth) completing the scoring. Rory Hilton was sixth, Max Roughton seventh, Zach Cleary ninth, Dylan Rossi tenth, and Mattie Gemmell 14th. The U17 and U20 Women run together and the Chiltern team were easy winners with Maddie Hughes winning the race narrowly from Frankie Baxter, and Allegra Massey in fourth completing the scoring. Ellie Shield was sixth, Maddie Rae eighth, Sofia Lomas 12th, Jo Snelling 13th, Annabelle Hilton 16th and Ellie Gowers 20th. The U17 and U20 Men also compete together. In the U17 part of the race Thomas Redmond won silver with Matt Evans seventh and Sammy Bennetts ninth. James Palmer was seventh overall and first U20 and Henry Webb was fifth U20. U20 Tom Emery was well paced but had to withdraw after rolling an ankle. The Senior Women did very well missing team gold by just one point and the Vets were team winners. In a small race the Chiltern scorers were Bex Nkoane in second, Ellie Bates fourth and Katie Royals fifth. The winning Vets threesome was Bex, Abi Askey ninth and Tamsin Finch 12th. Miriam Kempson was third in the Vet 55 race. The Senior Men had a convincing win and filled the podium. George Brown won on the tough, 10k course with Will Brown second and Richard Slade third. Making up the six scorers were Aran Davidson in sixth, Alex Aldred in eighth, and Nick Hughes in 11th. Nick won the Vet 50 category and lead home the victorious Vets quartet of Neil Turner 18th, Michael Turney 21st and Ian Lawson 29th. Adam Shute was 13th and Jonny Slade 28th. Several Chiltern youngsters were taking part in the Southern Inter Counties championships at Oxford Horspath on Saturday. This is a high calibre meeting with some of the strongest counties in the country involved. On a very cold but sunny day, Buckinghamshire won the U17 Women’s race convincingly with two Chiltern runners amongst the scorers, and two others in the top thirty. The U13 Girls also featured a strong Chiltern presence with all four Buckinghamshire scorers coming from the club. Kara Gorman was tenth, Evelyn Wildman 24th, Nia Clarke 33rd and Carys Jones 66th. The team were sixth.
Tom Ford had a good run for Hertfordshire in the U13 Boys race coming 18th and was second Herts scorer in the team that came fifth. Amongst the Bucks team that was eighth, Charlie Quantrill was second scorer in 38th, Felix Danielli third scorer in 57th and Jacon McCall fourth scorer in 82nd. Isaac McCall was 106th. Emily Ford ran well for ninth and was the leading Herts runner in the U15 Girls race. Lily Jessop-Tranter running for Bucks was 80th. The Bucks U15 Boys were twelfth and saw a good Chiltern turnout: Rory Hilton was second scorer in 71st, James Holdsworth third in 74th, and Aidan Suleyman fourth in 89th. Isaac Collier was 105th and Soren Fox 109th. Alex Hughes started the race but soon had to pull out after being very badly spiked early on. The Bucks U17 Women had a great race with Maddie Hughes first scorer in fifth, Frankie Baxter second scorer in seventh. Also running very well were Allegra Massey fifth Bucks in 17th and Ellie Shield sixth Bucks in 28th, emphasising the strength of the county in this age group currently. In the U17 Men’s race Archie Pinder ran well to be second Herts scorer in 18th. The team was fourth. Euan Pinder was sixth Herts finisher in 52nd. |
